In Ontario, early childhood education is grounded in the belief that play is the most effective way for young children to learn. Guided by the Ministry of Education’s How Does Learning Happen? framework, play-based learning is at the heart of quality child care and Early Childhood Assistants (ECAs) play a vital role in bringing it to life.
What Is Play-Based Learning?
Play-based learning is a child-led, inquiry-based approach that fosters:
- Creativity and imagination
- Problem-solving and decision-making
- Social and emotional development
- Language and communication skills
- Physical coordination and confidence
Children explore their environment, ask questions, test ideas, and express themselves through a variety of play experiences, from block building and dramatic play to outdoor exploration and art.
The ECA’s Role in Supporting Play
ECAs are key facilitators of meaningful play. They:
- Create inviting, open-ended learning environments
- Observe children’s interests and scaffold activities based on their curiosity
- Encourage social interactions and guide conflict resolution
- Collaborate with RECEs to ensure play connects to learning goals
- Support inclusive participation so every child can engage and thrive
“When we follow a child’s lead during play, we’re not just watching, we’re learning who they are and how to support their growth.” @ SKD ECE BIT Faculty
At SKD ECE BIT, our program trains future ECAs to understand the science and purpose behind play, ensuring graduates can support developmentally appropriate, joyful, and effective learning experiences.
