What does a typical day look like for an Early Childhood Assistant (ECA)? The truth is, no two days are ever the same! ECAs are the heart of child care, supporting children’s development, assisting RECEs, and building strong relationships with families.
To give you a glimpse into the profession, we asked SKD ECE BIT graduates working in Durham Region to share what a day in their life looks like:
👩🏾🦱 Fran – ECA at a Licensed Daycare in Ajax
7:30 AM – Greet families and help with morning drop-off
9:00 AM – Lead a storytime circle for toddlers in French and English setting
10:00 AM – Set up a sensory play station and supervise outdoor play
11:30 AM – Assist with lunch, encourage healthy eating habits
12:30 PM – Support nap time routines, tidy up the classroom
2:00 PM – Help children complete an art activity for graduation day
4:00 PM – Chat with parents about their child’s day and progress
“The best part of my day is seeing a child’s face light up when they master something new, like tying a shoelace or saying ‘merci!’” Fran, ECA.
👨🏽🦱 Alexis – Home-Based ECA with a Licensed Agency in Pickering
8:00 AM – Welcome a small group of children into his home child care space
9:00 AM – Guide mixed-age play-based learning, including music and movement
11:00 AM – Serve a healthy homemade lunch and encourage self-feeding
1:00 PM – Engage older children in storytelling while younger ones nap
3:00 PM – Do puzzles, crafts, and free play until pick-up
“Working from home gives me flexibility and lets me build strong bonds with both children and parents. I love the family-like atmosphere” Alex, ECA.
These stories show just how diverse, dynamic, and fulfilling a career as an ECA can be. Whether in a center or home setting, ECAs make a lasting impact, one hug, high-five, and helping hand at a time.
